Luxembourg's dynamic economy and infrastructure attract many cross-border workers. When these workers have young children, the question of childcare becomes crucial. Parental assistant, nanny at home, municipal nursery or private nursery: it's not always easy to choose between the different childcare solutions. However, many parents opt for daycare, especially private daycare centers. In this article, we will explore in detail all the steps to secure a daycare spot in Luxembourg as a cross-border worker, dive into how nurseries and daycare centers operate in Luxembourg, and understand the essential role of CSA (Chèque Service Accueil) for parents.

How to Get a Daycare Spot in Luxembourg as a Cross-Border Worker?

For cross-border parents working in Luxembourg, access to daycare is an excellent way to balance work and family life. Unlike French daycare centers, Luxembourg daycares accept children from 0 to 4 years old. They offer a safe and welcoming environment. Did you know? Nurseries accept children from 2 months to 4 years old. For children aged 4 to 12 years, daycares centers take care of them outside of school hours.

The procedures to obtain a daycare spot in Luxembourg are relatively simple, although demand can be high due to the increasing number of cross-border workers wanting a place for their children. If you want to secure a spot in a municipal daycare, you must contact the local administration. Each municipality may have its own admission criteria and conditions, so it is recommended to inquire with the relevant municipality.

Cross-border parents wishing to secure a spot in a KidsCare daycare must provide the following documents:

  • A certificate of income from the Administration of Direct Contributions (ACD),
  • The parent(s)' work contract(s),
  • A recent household composition.

If you are a couple (married, in a civil partnership, or cohabiting), you must also provide:

  • The most recent household tax statement,
If you live in France, a tax declaration status notice,
  • Any other documents that show income received outside Luxembourg (such as allowances or RSA).

If you are separated or divorced, you must provide:

  • A tax statement,
  • The divorce judgment extract with the child custody arrangements,
  • Proof of alimony payments for the child, which is required for CSA.

Chèque Service Accueil: Support for Cross-Border Workers

Cross-border parents working in Luxembourg contribute to Luxembourg's social security system, which allows them to benefit from valuable support for childcare services. Cross-border households working in Luxembourg but not residing there must contact the Caisse pour l'Avenir des Enfants (CAE) to benefit from CSA. The amount of assistance varies depending on your financial situation and the number of children in your care. CSA is designed to make childcare services more affordable for families. This approach helps cross-border parents better balance their professional and family responsibilities.
The Ministry of Education contributes financially up to a maximum of 60 hours per week, at a rate of €6 per hour for collective structures. Additionally, the state covers up to five meals per week. Any other expenses are the responsibility of the household.
